What makes an electric scooter road legal in Ireland?

Under S.I. No. 199/2024, a road-legal e-scooter used in a public place must meet all applicable technical requirements, including:

• maximum design speed of 20 km/h
• maximum continuous rated motor power of 400W
• maximum net weight of 25 kg, including the battery
• wheels at least 200 mm in diameter
• a standing platform and no seat
• front and rear lights, reflectors, brakes and an audible warning device

Irish e-scooter rules for riders

Under the rules currently in force, riders must be at least 16, ride on the left and obey traffic signals.
